Recommended profile of admission

This PhD programme is aimed at those wishing to undertake their doctoral thesis in the field of linguistics or in Galician, Portuguese or Spanish, as well as Spanish Sign Language (LSE), or, potentially, in the field of another language.
The appropriate academic background for admission to this PhD programme lies, firstly, in undergraduate and master’s degree programmes in Linguistics or those that include in-depth study of one of these languages: Spanish, Galician or Portuguese, such as the traditional degrees in Spanish Philology, Galician Philology, Portuguese Philology, whether in Spanish or foreign degree programmes, provided that the entry requirements are met. Secondly, other pathways related to languages and linguistics may be taken into account, from disciplines such as Translation and Interpreting, Education, Psychology, Communication or Language Technologies. In the case of these mixed profiles, admission will be conditional upon completing 6 ECTS credits in supplementary modules within a Master’s degree in Linguistics, preferably the Inter-University Master’s in Applied Linguistics (MILA), whose website can be visited via the following link: https://mila.uvigo.gal/gl/
For students from countries or regions with language backgrounds other than Spanish-speaking or Portuguese-speaking, a minimum level of proficiency in Spanish, Galician or Portuguese equivalent to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required. It is recommended that applicants have, at a minimum, a B1 level of the CEFR in a language other than those mentioned above, particularly English, or another Romance language (French, Italian, etc.). If they do not meet this requirement at the time of application, they may demonstrate it during the first year of their doctoral studies.
It will also be necessary to submit, in writing, a statement of intent regarding a potential thesis project or topic, the line of research in which they would like to work, or the motivation(s) for undertaking that specific research.
