Concurrent Programme of Studies for Degree in Biology and Degree in Chemistry

2023/2024 · 369 credits

Introduction

Biology is a very important Science for the sustainable development of society. It aims to understand the phenomenon of life, observing it from different perspectives and attending to the different levels of complexity in which it manifests itself. From the molecules with which the different structures are built and the biological information is transmitted, to the ecosystems in which the communities integrate with their environment, passing through the cells and multicellular organisms, with their panoply of physical and chemical signals that ensure the correct functioning of living beings, everything is important and necessary in the training of a modern biologist. Chemistry deals with the properties, changes and reactions of all types of compounds and materials, the research of structures and mechanisms of chemical transformations and the synthesis of new species or substances, in many cases for technological purposes. It provides the conceptual framework and methodology of Biochemistry and is the core of a huge variety of industrial activities. It has a central role in progress and well-being, developing new products and technologies that affect all areas of society, being one of the pillars of a country's competitive skill. It presents possibilities of development in the protection of health and the environment, in the improvement of hygienic-sanitary conditions, in obtaining more and better food and in the manufacture of new materials that improve the quality of life.

Why study

The aim of the concurrent programme is to train students who, by the end of their studies, have acquired the professional skills of the Degrees in Biology and Chemistry needed to enter the workplace both as regards the fields of each of the qualifications and in the multiple areas where they specifically need the collaboration of both disciplines. By the end of their studies, the students will have two Degree certificates (a Degree in Chemistry and a Degree in Biology).

The concurrent programme provides students with a scientific-technical training in accordance with current scientific methodologies which allows them to assess the importance of the application of Biology and Chemistry in an industrial, economic, environmental and social context.

Also, these studies give students a solid, balanced base of theoretical-practical knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to continue their learning in specialised or multidisciplinary areas of both sciences.
