PhD in Statistics and Operational Research

2025/2026

Introduction

The PhD programme in Statistics and Operations Research is an official inter-university degree offered jointly by the three public universities of Galicia. Its objective is to train researchers in the area of statistics and operations research, so that they are able to carry out a doctoral thesis and develop a subsequent academic or professional career in this scientific field.

Why study

The scientific-technological field in which PDEIO students are trained, and in which their doctoral theses are carried out, is organised into two main lines of research: Statistics and Data Science (EST) and Operations Research: Optimisation and Game Theory (IO). These are lines of great importance for the development not only of basic science, but of great transversality, since new contributions in these lines are relevant for the advancement of other disciplines such as biomedicine, economics, engineering, computer science, environmental sciences and, more recently, digital humanities and artificial intelligence. This transversality is reflected in the high employability of PDEIO graduates, not only in the academic field, but also in different sectors of the private sector, such as finance, energy or consulting. The PDEIO aims to provide solid training (in EST and IO) to its students, training professionals with MECES 4 competence level, capable of adapting to the needs and demands of the great global challenges in various areas of society. An additional proof of the transversal profile underlying the PDEIO's lines of research is given by the interdisciplinary nature of many of the theses developed in the Programme. It should be noted that the context in which PDEIO students are trained is remarkably active in research, as can be seen in the organisation of the research groups involved in the Programme. In a unique way, around the PDEIO there is also an important transfer activity to the productive sector, channelled mainly through the Centre for Mathematical Research and Technology of Galicia (CITMAga, https://citmaga.gal/es/home) and the Centre for Research in Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC, https://citic.udc.es/), which allows the students of the programme to actively collaborate in transfer projects. thus obtaining a valuable complement in their doctoral training and, sometimes, also being able to form a relevant part of the doctoral thesis.

This is an interuniversity study, in addition to University of A Coruña, the following universities also colaborate in teaching:

  • Universidad de Vigo
  • Universidad de Santiago de Compostela
