2026/2027

Introduction

The Master’s Degree in Chronicity and New Models of Sociosanitary Care has as its main objective to provide students in the sociosanitary field with advanced knowledge and training in the comprehensive care of chronicity, disability, and dependency across all stages of life. To achieve this, it is based on an interdisciplinary and multidimensional approach, addressing the clinical-care, social, management, and research aspects, while promoting innovation and entrepreneurship as a response to the rapid and constant social evolution in this field.

The master’s program offers three specializations:

• The specialization in Functional Rehabilitation in Chronicity, Disability, and Dependency provides the knowledge and work methodology necessary for the comprehensive management of major chronic diseases and the processes causing disability and dependency.

• The specialization in Psychosocial Intervention in Chronicity, Disability, and Dependency offers theoretical and practical knowledge for the identification and management of psychosocial conditions associated with chronicity, disability, and dependency at different stages of life.

• The specialization in Intervention, Research, and Innovation in Neurological Physiotherapy provides advanced knowledge in the assessment and physiotherapeutic intervention of neurologically-originated diseases that produce chronicity, disability, and dependency in childhood, adulthood, and old age.

Why study

The implementation proposal responds to a strategic need of the Galician University System as a result of the project “Galicia 2030: Professional Profiles of the Future and New Degrees and Specializations,” which highlighted the need to train professionals from different areas and to respond to the needs of people with chronic conditions and their consequences.

The increase in life expectancy and unhealthy lifestyles raises the prevalence of chronic diseases in society. These conditions have a biopsychosocial impact on people’s lives and generate a high socio-sanitary cost, causing disability, a high level of dependency, and the need for professional and caregiver support.

Galicia is the second autonomous community with the highest aging rate, and the percentage of the population aged 15 or older with at least one perceived chronic disease is 79.3% (2018).

The relevance of disability and dependency is considered a human rights issue since the entry into force of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD, 2008). The World Report on Disability (WHO, 2011) indicates that more than 1 billion people live with some form of disability, representing around 15% of the world’s population. At the national level, the latest report on disability derived from the Active Population Survey of the National Institute of Statistics (INE, 2020) places the prevalence of disability in Spain at 6.3%. The most recent data from the Olivenza Report (2020-21) corroborate these findings and indicate that the numbers are increasing.
