Through this master’s degree students acquire a wide range of knowledge and skills related to technical inspection and intervention in the architectural heritage in its multiple dimensions.

Additionally, and optionally, it provides education related to the documentary and technological research in architecture.

Generic skills

The intervention in the architectural heritage not only requires high technical training, but it also requires deep knowledge of historical, artistic and cultural values related to it. The practice is understood here from the knowledge of the past and building the future, interconnected tasks in which exists considerations of commitment to the society where it serves.

On the other hand, operate in a context where technical advances occur in an accelerated technical way requires the technician to assume learning strategies along their life, so that innovation and progressive technology development suppose a constant training source which enables them to confront new challenges.

Specific skills

The degree addresses multidisciplinary training according to multiple aspects of the conservation and intervention in the architectural heritage. Therefore it combines specific skills of various kinds:

  • Theoretical order: historical development and coordination studies, architectural criticism, monumental cataloging, defining measures to protect buildings and architectural ensembles, and drafting redistricting plans and conservation.
  • Architectural design: reconstruction projects, expansion and / or adjustment resulting from changes of use, alterations, or other contingencies.
  • Technical nature: inspection, maintenance, structural analysis, technical expert opinion, criterion for repair and / or reinforcement, conservation of thick and finished work, control and improvement of facilities, and design of measures pointed to energy efficiency.

Transversal skills

From the different subject´s organization and their corresponding training activities it’s intended to strengthen a wide set of transferable skills, in other words, skills which integrate cognitive, emotional and behavioral factors, and that are usually associated with a greater capacity to operate effectively in different professional fields. Among others, the following stand out:

  • Instrumental nature: including those with a generic cut, such as the ability for analysis and synthesis, skills in oral and written communication, or information management; but also other more specific ones, such as graphic skills or the use of computing means related to the field of study.
  • Personal field: skills in interpersonal relationships, behaviors in a collaborative work’s framework, critical thinking and ethical commitment.
  • Systemic type: independent learning strategies, adapting to new situations, creativity, enterprising skills, leadership, and motivation for quality.

Professional and academic career

The course of study aims to provide a multidisciplinary training directly linked to the following professional profiles:

  • Managers and technical personnel in public or private entities, who require achieving a high specializing qualification in subjects related to the architectural rehabilitation.
  • Professionals wishing to train as experts in building inspection and / or architectural pathology.
  • Researchers in public or private institutions, whose subject area is related to the field of architectural restoration.
  • Consultancy activities linked to expert opinion, conservation and intervention in the architectural heritage, with special emphasis on the evaluation of performance and diagnosis of injuries and degradation processes.
  • A training-oriented add-possible access to doctoral studies, in any case in accordance with the requirements and defined in the current regulations in force processes is also contemplated.

Planning for teaching

This qualification is designed under an annual structure of 60 ECTS credits. It includes 6 modules, whose orientation and content is available in this section. These modules house a total of 12 compulsory subjects, which in turn represent an amount of 36 credits. Same are given up to 11 electives, of which each person must take a minimum of 6 (18 credits).

Following an additional module is included, which is entirely dedicated to the Master's Thesis, with a workload of 6 credits, and which is conceived as a proposed synthesis and practical application of skills acquired throughout the cycle.

Student mobility

UDC holds student mobility agreements with universities and other third-level institutions across four continents. Students are offered several opportunities each year to apply to study abroad in one of these centres (for a single term or for a whole year), with the guarantee that all credits obtained will be duly recognised in their academic record upon their return.

For each round of applications, the University publishes the list of exchange options available to students and, where relevant, the specific conditions associated with each. Students may also apply to the University for funding for international work experience placements and internships.

Work experience placements are accredited in the student's academic record and the European diploma supplement. Students are free to decide in which host company or academic institution within the EHEA they wish to carry out their placement. To assist them in their search, the University has created an online noticeboard with jobs postings and other news.

Work-study placements in A Coruña are arranged by the International Relations Office (ORI) of the UDC in collaboration with the international relations coordinators in the student’s home university. The general entry criteria, rights and obligations of students, and admission and acceptance procedures for the programme, are regulated by the UDC Mobility Policy.
